6. Movement and Active Travel

If we are serious about active travel, we have to make it easier to walk and cycle into town from areas such as Rochfort Manor and other large housing estates on that route. They are all within easy cycling distance into Carlow Town, but the infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists on Leighlin road and Chaff street, going onto Graiguecullen bridge is frankly abysmal. It’s extremely dangerous to cross the road going towards Chaff street from Rochfort Manor and proper segregated cycling lanes are required to make cycling an option for almost everyone. I have had a number of near misses on that very stretch. It’s almost daily that a driver takes a risk and endangers me on my bike. I can’t allow my children (13 and 14 years) to cycle the short distance to school alone as it is just not safe. It’s robbed them of their independence and the traffic is polluting their lungs daily. I would suggest a one way system on Graiguecullen bridge for cars, wider paths and cycling lanes for pedestrians and cyclists (if we’re serious about what are our priorities). There’s an alternative road into town(yes the long way around, but people won’t be long about leaving the car at home when we filter the cars away from the main thoroughfare).
